Huawei Mate X2 is the latest foldable phone on the market, having just been unveiled by Huawei. The device makes quite a few changes from its predecessors, starting with the fact that it offers an in folding design. It also inaugurates the periscope camera on a foldable device.
The device is shaped like a wedge, being thickest near the camera module and becoming gradually slimmer, at just 4.4 mm at the other end. The camera part is the thickest one, since there’s a periscope lens in there. The inner display has an 8 inch diagonal and a square aspect ratio of 8:7:1, plus a resolution of 2480 x 2200 pixels. The external screen is 6.45 inches in diagonal and comes with a 21:9 aspect ratio. These are both OLED panels with a 90 Hz refresh rate.

The internal screen offers support for DCI-P3 colors, while the external doesn’t. There’s also a difference in touch sampling rate, at 240 Hz inside and 180 Hz outside. Another novelty is the fact that the inner screen has the industry’s first “magnetically controlled nano optical layer”. Basically it’s a new way of getting rid of glare and light reflection. Reflectivity is below 1.5%, compared to 5% or higher for the Galaxy Z Fold 2. No Ultra Thin Glass, though.
The hinge design lets you close the phone seamlessly, meaning that there should be no gap between the panels. Inside the OLED panel forms a teardrop shape to minimize creasing. Materials used here include a Zirconium-based liquid metal and carbon fiber panels. It all weighs 295 grams. The quad camera at the back has Leica tech, a 50 MP main sensor with RYYB tech, OIS and 4K video capture. There’s also a 10x periscope telephoto camera with OIS and an 8 MP RYYB sensor, with 20x hybrid zoom and up to 100X digital zoom.
Then there’s the 12 MP tele camera with 3X zoom and OIS and finally a 16 megapixel ultrawide shooter, which can also be used like a Macro cam. A singular front camera is here, only on the secondary screen. Inside the Huawei Mate X2 we find a Kirin 9000 processor, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB or 512 GB of storage. It runs on Android 10 and EMUI 11. This is a 5G phone with a 4500 mAh battery that supports Super Fast Charging at 55W, via the supplied adapter.
The price is going to be $2785, it seems.
