Everyone saw the Oracle versus Google lawsuit as the major peril that could kill Android. Well, that didn’t happen since Oracle didn’t win the battle in court against Google. They were asking for compensations and cease of use of the code in Android that was similar to one of their technologies. And now Google wants legal retribution…
The search engine giant wants $4 million from Oracle to cover the costs of the legal battle and probably the fees of the hungry, hungry lawyers. Oracle must pay the legal cost because the jury and judge ruled in favour of Google, so this kind of makes sense. Oracle recovered none of the amounts they asked for in the litigation, so they should pay up. The total bill that Google had to pay for defeating Oracle includes a $2.9 million in copying and organizing documents. The case involved no less than 97 million documents, which is a crazy amount.
It all started back in 2010, when Oracle sued Google, claiming that the search engine giant infringe its copyrights and patents by creating Android. The problem was Java, a programming language with a major role in the Android build. Oracle said that Google infringed on intellectual property by cloning 37 Java APIs. In the end, judges ruled that Google only used nine lines of code and two test files and that’s it. Oracle wants to appeal, but in the meantime they should pay up the trial expenses…
