I’m pretty sure you haven’t heard of the company called Bigme, since I also haven’t. They’ve just come up with a device dubbed Bigme S3, which is a surprising color E Ink Display eReader. The product uses the new Kaleido display technology, that supports up to 4096 colors. We have details below.

Chinese outfit Bigme launched the Bigme B1 Pro with a 10.3 inch color E Ink display a while ago and now they introduced the 7.8 inch Bigme S3. The product is already up for preorder on online retailer JD.com and it’s priced at around $540. Its key specs include a 7.8 inch 1404 x 1872 pixel color E Ink display, with front light with 36 brightness levels. It also has a 1.8 GHz octa core processor, 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage. It runs on Android 8.1 and uses a 2000 mAh battery.

We also have an USB-C port, dual microphones (for voice transcription) and it all weighs 7.8 ounces. The Bigme S3 is an eReader first and then a tablet, plus it supports popular formats for eBooks and digital magazines, as well as comics, including EPUB, Mobi and PDF. It can also be used as an Android tablet which runs apps. There’s also a feature on board with support for translating speech to text note taking. The device works with a digital pen that lets you draw or write on the screen.

The Kaleido screen tech does have a drawback: the color content looks grainier than grayscale content. That’s because the screens have a color filter applied on top of a normal E Ink panel. Odds are pretty slim of seeing this outside China, but one can hope.
