A bunch of hardware modders have recently played with the Barnes and Noble nook ebook reader, turning it into a sort of Android tablet, with a free mobile connection. The hack involves a “teardown”, followed by a “rooting”, meaning that obtaining root privileges offers the user control of the device.
This customization also means that you’ll be messing with the insides of the nook with a screwdriver, while the software side of the hack is trickier than unlocking an iPhone, for example. Of course, following the hack instructions on the nookDevs site will void the warranty of your device, even if you’re careful enough.
We remind you that nook retails for $259 and that its Internet connection only allows users to buy and download new eBooks, but there will soon be a hack for unleashing full web features, too.
