Leave it to Japan to get all the goodies first! ASUS has got to be the first big brand to release a 64 bit Intel-based tablet with Android and that’s happening right now via Japanese carrier KDDI. Over the past week we’ve seen 3 smaller Chinese companies also launching 64 bit Android slates, so I can’t say I’m surprised.

The newcomer from ASUS is basically the ASUS MeMo Pad 8 in a different version. This model uses an 8 inch 1920 x 1200 pixel display with IPS technology and inside the slate we find the Intel Atom Z3580, from the Moorefield line. This 64 bit CPU runs at up to 2.3 GHz and the tablet also packs 4G LTE connectivity, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage, a 5 megapixel main camera and a 1.2 MP front shooter.

There’s also a 4350 mAh battery on board and all of that is stuffed within a 7.5 mm thick waistline. The ASUS MeMo Pad 8 new version weighs 305 grams and its release date and price is unknown. The original model had an ARM Cortex A9 CPU, so this is quite a bump in specs. As far as I can see, KDDI offers 3 color versions of the tablet: blue, pink and white.
