The folks of AU Optronics debuted a panel that may become one of the main choices for 2K phablets. It’s a 5.7 incher with a 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution and it uses AMOLED technology.
This is actually one of the first AMOLED panels for phones with such a resolution and I bet that Samsung is really angry they didn’t come up with it first. Samsung is meanwhile preparing a 5.2 inch WQHD AMOLED panel for the market release, but there’s no rush, since they’re probably going to use it on the Galaxy S6.
With Apple saying that the human eye can’t tell past the 326 pixel per inch density on a smartphone screen, what’s the point in having these 500+ ppi screens? The AUO display reaches 513 PPI, while Samsung’s will go to 560 ppi. LCDs for handsets have already reached the 2K level, with the Vivo Xplay3S and Oppo Find 7 devices being living proof of that.
God forbid TFT goes that way, since no one likes TFT these days…
