If you’re used to the bright and colourful AMOLED panels on the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note, well, prepare to get some other panel. The latest rumor claims that the next gen Galaxy S and Galaxy Note may switch from AMOLED to LCD.
The reason for this is supposedly cutting down costs, which makes sense considering we’re talking about tens of millions of panels here. Keep in mind that Samsung is only considering this option, so they haven’t decided just yet. The report with the info says that Samsung could cut as much as 20% of the cost by opting for a PLS LCD over AMOLED.
Seeing how high the profit margin is for Samsung’s phones, I doubt they worry about costs so much. If I’m not mistaking the CPU costs a lot compared to the other components, so maybe they can work something out there. Hopefully the new screens will also be power efficient…
