The Vivaldi tablet isn’t a name that I’ve heard before, I have to admit that, but when it’s associated with the KDE Plasma Active software, it rings a bell. This is a 200 euro tablet that will be shipping in May and right now you can check out an early unit being torn apart at OpenTablets.org.
No surprises during the teardown: this tablet, also known as the Spark for a while (now I know what it is!) comes with a 1GHz AMLogic ARM Cortex A9 CPU, Mali 400 graphics and 512 MB of RAM. There’s also 4GB of storage and an 800 x 480 pixel display, plus a HDMI port and 2 USB ports, plus a front camera. Actually, this device is a Zenithink C71 tablet and people say it’s easy to disassemble. Only four screws and a couple of plastic tabs hold the case together.
The thing to know here is that there’s extra room left for a larger battery and other user customizations, if you’re the kind of guy who tweaks his slate. It could also be possible to switch to a higher resolution display, apparently. RAM upgrades are unlikely though, because the memory is attached to the system board… So this is a truly open tablet, both in hardware and software, since it’s open to customizations in both areas. Right now the device provides 7 hours of battery life, according to the people who tested it.
