A total of 55 million iPads were sold since the launch of the tablet in 2010 and if this keeps up, notebooks and laptops will be surpassed in a matter of months. The iPad evolution even surprises Apple CEO Tim Cook, who predicted that the slates will take over the PC segment.

He even said that the iPad is cannibalizing Mac sales, but Windows PC sales are taking a bigger hit. Cook also hinted at the Amazon Kindle Fire, saying that tablets with limited functions won’t be as popular as full fledged tablet PCs with all the functionality needed to replace a PC. The CEO defined the iPad as a general purpose device, not just a limited one for media consumption, which is a clear reference to the Kindle Fire.
