We’re already familiar with the iPad and we can predict how iOS and Honeycomb will evolve in the following months, but what about other players in the tablet segment? A bit of Microsoft’s plans leaked out, courtesy of Intel senior VP of software Renee James, who also mentioned Windows 8 and the way it will be implemented on slates.

Microsoft will apparently come out with 4 versions of Win 8 for ARM CPUs, plus Intel versions. James said that the ARM versions won’t run apps created for older version of Windows that ran on Intel’s x86 architecture. Also, the same official mentioned that the Intel flavor of Win 8 will be aimed at the smartphone and tablet market.

This makes the next iteration of Windows sound like it will have a ton of versions at this point… It makes us think of lower end variants, business ones and even some midrange Win 8 out there. How about developers and their work when creating software for this platform? They will have to choose between ARM and Intel or work with porting software…
