WebOS was spotted over the past days ported on a few devices, including the Galaxy Nexus phone. HP offered the Open WebOS software to interested people recently and they can take it over and turn into something more commercially viable, maybe… An early build of Open webOS 1.0 was seen working on Galaxy Nexus and now the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime tablet got the same treatment, courtesy of developer Steven Troughton-Smith.

The build here is in very early stages, with the primary working aspects being the boot and webOS lock screen. Troughton-Smith says that he’s making rapid progress and during the coming months he says that we should expect more ports, on various devices. There are people who prefer the webOS user interface to other UIs and developers are happy to have something to play with. The resurrection of webOS may turn into something interesting and while a bunch of months ago people could have guessed that webOS was dead now it’s back, with solid promises.

Imagine an OS entirely driven by the open source community and developers and pushed to its limits, constantly updated and reinforced, with updates as often as one can get. Sounds dreamy right? Let’s see if they can achieve that with Open WebOS…
