Microsoft has been working on a Domain Awareness application for the New York Police Department and now they’ll deploy the solution on their Surface slates used by the NYPD. This is able to compile all the data needed by the officers and more.

One example of the use of such a system is a deadly shooting outside the Empire State Building in August 2012. Dozens of 911 calls were made and initially it seemed like an attack by a few gunmen. However, the officers were able to map the calls, used the local cameras and get all the intel needed within 500 feet of the shots, coming to the conclusion there was a single shooter.

The solution is being tested on LTE enabled Surface tablets and they’re running in Kiosk mode for now. This is merely a pilot program to evaluate the efficiency of the system, but it ma result in an official rollout soon enough.
