Although some people like criticizing the Samsung Galaxy Note simply based on its looks, it appears that this smartablet/phablet is the start of a trend actually. The LG Optimus Vu and some other Android devices with 5+ inch diagonals are a clear indication to that. Now, ABI Research published a prediction, saying that over 208 million phablets will be sold by 2015.

In case a “phablet” is a mystery to you, it’s that smartphone with a screen that measures between 4.6 inches and 5.5 inches diagonal. If you ask me, the phablet is a device with a diagonal above 5 inches, but experts have their way of measuring things. Anyway, the Samsung Galaxy Note is the most important and famous phablet right now and also the LG Optimus Vu at 5 inches. ABI Research is saying that one of the reason for phablets to be popular is the amount of time people spend on smartphones for browsing, reading articles and newspapers on the go.

The larger screen makes a lot of difference, according to Senior Analyst Joshua Flood. Even the iPhone is supposed to be “scared” by this trend, so it’s increasing its diagonal, according to rumors. Samsung Galaxy S III opted for that huge 4.8 inch screen, so phones are also influenced by the public’s need for more space, especially when it comes to reading news. It all depends on what people want and if you already own a tablet and a smartphone you clearly don’t need a phablet. On the other hand the phablet can replace both items…

A “phablet” is not replacing anything. It’s a useless piece of hardware. Too big as a phone, too small as a tablet. 5″ is still to small. Even 7″ is small. I know, I had a Note. You can’t watch a movie, you’ll get to wear glasses after long periods of watching a small screen.
And as a phone, it’s too weird, always in need of both hands. If I have bags from shopping, or I’m carrying something in my hand, I can’t answer the phone if someone is calling. Always in need to operate with both hands.

I have a phone, an ordinary phone and a tablet. A tablet is better at watching content, battery lasts longer. That way, I don’t have to worry that my “phablet” battery dies in a call.

These are niche gadgets. Many want them, but not all.

You forgot to say the S pen, so important! It makes the difference for work!
