E Ink has got to be one of the most neglected technologies on portable devices nowadays, but it’s steadily evolving for sure. Onyx is one of the companies working with this tech and producing devices like the 13.3 inch E Ink model Onyx Book Max 2 Pro. It’s priced at $800 and detailed below.

Onyx already shipped a 13.3 incher with E Ink this year, the Onyx Book Max Carta. It had appealing feats, like a high contrast and low power display, plus a larger diagonal, which is always a plus. The new model is the Onyx Book Max 2 and it adopts the same E Ink Carta flexible plastic screen, with a 2200 x 1650 pixel resolution. It offers support for both pen and finger touch input, while the original was all about the pen action.

We also get more powerful hardware and updated software. The Onyx Book Max 2 Pro can be preordered from the eReader Store at $790 and should ship at the end of the current month. It packs a 1.6 GHz quad core processor, 2 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage and physical buttons for menu, back, next and previous pages. Book Max 2 also brings a Wacom digitizer for pen input.

There’s WiFi and Bluetooth support here, as well as a 3.5 mm audio jack, plus text to speech and obviously support for a ton of reading formats, like PDF, EPUB, MOBI, TXT, HTML, JPG, PNG and BMP. MP3 and WAV also make the cut. Strangely there’s even an unexpected HDMI input port here, letting you use the device as E Ink monitor for other devices. This product is based on Android 6.0 and should offer 4 weeks of standby time.
