At its May 6th event, Microsoft quietly introduced the Surface Laptop (2025) — a new 13-inch model that positions itself as a more compact, energy-efficient addition to the Surface lineup. Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Plus, this device promises excellent battery life, but comes with noticeable compromises compared to its larger siblings.

Let’s get one thing out of the way: this isn’t the flagship Surface Laptop. In fact, it feels more like a Surface Pro Lite in laptop form. The 13-inch Surface Laptop 2025 is equipped with an octa-core Snapdragon X Plus chip, 16GB of LPDDR5x RAM, and 512GB of UFS storage. The display is a 13-inch LCD panel, with a 1920×1080 resolution, 60Hz refresh rate, and peak brightness of 400 nits — a significant downgrade from the 120Hz HDR-ready displays found on the 13.8-inch and 15-inch variants.

But where it shines is battery life. Microsoft claims up to 23 hours of video playback, which sets it apart as a strong contender for users focused on longevity over raw power. Still, there’s no HDR support, and the refresh rate might feel sluggish for anyone used to smoother panels.

Connectivity also walks the line between legacy and modern. Gone is the proprietary Surface Connect port — in its place, users get two USB-C 3.2 ports, one USB-A, and support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. Weighing in at 1.22kg, the Surface Laptop 2025 is relatively light and comes in three colors: Ocean, Violet, and Platinum.

Starting at $899, the 13-inch model clearly aims to capture the budget-conscious Surface fan who values portability and battery life, but doesn’t mind cutting corners on performance and display tech. Pre-orders begin May 20, including via Amazon UK.

If you were hoping for a breakthrough device in this size category, this isn’t quite it — but if you just want an all-day machine with Snapdragon efficiency and Surface polish, it might be exactly what you need.

The starting price is $899.
