iPhone Duo’s Shift Left Edge Setting Makes Room for Cases on the Cover Display

Foldable phones ask more of a case than a conventional slab phone: an accessory must protect the device without getting in the way of displays, hinges, or touch controls. On Apple’s iPhone Duo, a setting called “Shift Left Edge” appears designed for one particularly awkward scenario—when a case partially covers the left side of the 5.4-inch outer display.

Nicolas Lellouche spotted the option during a hands-on session with the phone. When enabled, it moves the cover-display interface to the right, leaving an added black area at the left side. The on-screen explanation says the feature is intended for use when a case partly obstructs that edge of the display.

Trading screen area for reliable gestures

The left edge matters because it is also a starting point for navigation gestures. A thick case lip could make an edge swipe harder to perform consistently, so Apple’s solution is to sacrifice a small amount of usable screen space rather than leave the interface competing with the accessory. In practical terms, the setting creates a software bezel only when it is needed.

Apple has announced two first-party accessories—the iPhone Duo Case and iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand—but the company’s published images do not establish that either one blocks only the outer display’s left edge. The feature may therefore be intended for thicker third-party or rugged cases, though Apple has not confirmed which accessories it targets.

The extra black strip is distinct from the letterboxing that can appear in older apps not adapted to iPhone Duo’s new form factor. In this case, the unused area is intentional: a compatibility measure for physical accessories, rather than an app-layout issue.

Apple announced iPhone Duo on September 9. Preorders are scheduled to begin October 16, followed by availability in initial markets on October 23; U.S. availability and pricing are not confirmed in the available information. Shift Left Edge looks most relevant to buyers who plan to use protective, heavy-duty cases, but its real value will depend on whether those accessories actually interfere with the cover display’s edge gestures.
