Huawei has officially entered the foldable laptop race with the announcement of the MateBook Fold ULTIMATE DESIGN, its most ambitious portable computer yet. Touted as the world’s largest commercial foldable screen PC, this 18-inch LTPO OLED device brings HarmonyOS 5 to laptops for the first time and marks a bold new step for Huawei’s hardware ambitions.
At the heart of the MateBook Fold is a dual-layer flexible OLED LTPO display that folds from an expansive 18 inches (3,296 × 2,472 px, 4:3) into a more compact 13-inch form factor (2,472 × 1,648 px, 3:2). It’s protected by a carbon fiber layer and non-Newtonian fluid coating, reaching a peak HDR brightness of 1,600 nits, a stunning 92% screen-to-body ratio, and a silky 1440Hz PWM dimming frequency for eye comfort. The display is also highly power-efficient — Huawei claims a 30% energy saving compared to conventional OLEDs.
Physically, the device is ultra-thin and light: just 7.3mm thick when open, 14.9mm folded, and tipping the scale at 1.16kg. Huawei achieved this with a custom basalt waterdrop hinge made from zirconium-based liquid metal and a multi-link structure that supports flexible angles between 30° and 150°, with built-in kickstand support.
Premium build, powerful internals
While Huawei hasn’t disclosed the exact processor inside, the MateBook Fold ULTIMATE DESIGN comes equipped with 32GB of RAM and either 1TB or 2TB of NVMe PCIe SSD storage. It’s cooled by dual diamond aluminum fans, just 3.5mm thick, aided by a vapor chamber and anti-gravity pump that help stabilize performance in any orientation.
The device is loaded with features:
- 8MP front-facing camera
- Six speakers and quad microphones
- Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, and 2x USB-C ports
- Fingerprint scanner built into the power button
- 74.69Wh battery with 140W USB-C fast charging
The battery capacity suggests all-day usage, with estimates in the 8–12 hour range depending on usage. Huawei includes a 140W charger, USB-C braided cable, screen cloth, a laptop sleeve, and even a separate pouch for accessories — an uncommonly complete package.
HarmonyOS 5 on a PC — finally
This is the first Huawei PC powered by HarmonyOS 5, a system designed for multi-device fluidity. It supports seamless integration with Huawei phones, tablets, smart TVs, watches, and headphones. Huawei claims over 150 exclusive PC apps are now HarmonyOS-native, with 1,000+ optimized for ecosystem usage and 2,000+ apps accelerated.
There’s also a virtual keyboard mode, but a physical wireless 5mm keyboard (290g, 1.5mm key travel) is bundled in the box. The keyboard pairs automatically and lasts up to 24 days on a single charge.
