Today is all about Samsung and its foldable phone, plus the Galaxy S10, but we still find time for some love for Apple. Letsgodigital.org came up with a render for the future foldable iPhone, taking the clamshell route.
The renders follow the recently leaked patents for the device, that proposed a variety of formats. We see the device looking like some proto Moto RAZR 2019, with minimal edges and thickness. The foldable Apple phone is going to debut in 2020, according to the latest leaks and speculations. The main problem I have with this design is that it feels and looks very fragile.
It feels like it’s a broken phone and wouldn’t flex without hurting components. It’s either using an incredibly flexible screen and parts, or it’s just wishful thinking. The source of the design, Letsgodigital claims that the device can be folded in and out. One reason for the way this device looks is the simplicity of the Apple patents, shown as basic outlines, something they’ve always done.
The reason for having a vertical and elongated phone is that you can easily operate it with a single hand. It’s actually surprising that the phone can bend in two directions.. Folding it in makes it a square and it you bend it backwards it enters a stand position. The cameras are positioned at the top part of the case and in this case we see a single front camera upfront and dual camera at the back.
The handset has very narrow bezels, at the top, bottom and sides. I feel that the UI would also have to be changed to fit the new design approach. We need some new materials before this can happen.
