When Apple showcased the iPad Air 2 and dubbed it the thinnest tablet in the world, at 6.1 mm, there were voices saying that the title actually belongs to another slate. That’s the Dell Venue 8 7000, measuring just 6 mm in thickness.

The iPad Air 2 is still an impressive evolution from the iPad Air, with a 18% decrease in thickness. The thing is that if Apple does launch the Air 2 in stores faster than the Dell product, it may have a point in calling it the thinnest, but only for a few days or weeks, till the Dell model comes. Dell Venue 8 7000 was unveiled at IDF 2014, a few weeks ago. The design isn’t half bad and even seems to include a hefty front speaker.

The thing is that the Dell product didn’t not get enough coverage from the press and got dismissed fast, with some editors probably imagining it’s a run of the mill Windows slate, not even an Android device. This is a pretty good product at first glance, with a very solid metal build, which really matters, especially if the new iPad Air 2 will suffer from Bendgate, as a malevolent would expect.

Its screen also beats the Apple Retina Display resolution, offering  a 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution on an 8 inch screen. Still, the two compete in different segments: 10 inch or so slate and 8 inch…
