Gorilla Glass is on every smartphone nowadays, keeping their displays safe from scratches and cracks, but now its maker, Corning has decided to unveil a new technology: Lotus. This is a new type of glass panel, used on smartphones, tablets and laptops.

The result will be more durable and strong screens and Corning says that the glass will be made by super heating it and then cooling it down slowly. What will come out of this? A very thin sheet of glass that can be embedded into OLED displays and next-gen LCDs. Lotus Glass also has teh advantage of reduced power requirements for the screen technology and as a bonus it’s environmentally friendly.

Plus, it provides better clarity and image quality, so maybe this time Apple will be on board with the tech and embedded it in the next iPhone or iPad. We’ll have to wait and see…
