We knew that the Nexus 7 was a big deal and a hit, ever since Google said it expects to sell around 8 million units of the device this year. Now ASUS goes out and says that they’re closing to 1 million units a month. The 7 inch slate made a huge buzz when it debuted with a price tag of $199, but up until now both Google and ASUS have been secretive about the sales.
The Asustek executives made the unveiling following the company’s third quarter earnings conference from Tuesday. At the start the product moved 500k units a month, then 600k to 700 k. However, in the latest month of the quarter it was close to 1 million apparently, according to Asustek CFO David Chang, quoted by Wall Street Journal. Weeks ago tech blogs speculated that the number is around 800k to 1 million units, based on the Google revenue figures, divided into product segments and turns out they were quite right.
Of course, the number pales when compared to the iPad’s 14 million units in Q3 and considering a total of 25 million tablets were sold globally in Q3, Apple still rules the segment. Now the Nexus 7 has a bigger sibling, the Nexus 10 and a smaller one, the Nexus 4. The 10 inch Nexus 10 goes for $399 in the 16 GB version and the phone goes for $299 free of contract. If they manage to also reach 1 million units a month till January or March, then Google may have beaten Apple, or at least Amazon…
