On the list of 7 inch tablets with Android 4.0 via unofficial methods we now find the Amazon Kindle Fire and the HTC Flyer, the latter through the work of an independent developer. Back in the days the Flyer was an overpriced 7 inch slate with a pretty good pen and a phone OS. However, due to the recent price changes and upgrade to Honeycomb, the device became suddenly appealing and now it even gets ICS.
The latest official software brings the slate to Android version 3.2, that’s starting to feel a bit old, considering people are already dreaming of Android Jellybean. XDA Developers forum member AidenM has released early builds of a custom ROM with ICS for the Flyer, that can be seen in action with this OS below. The ROM is called Skyfire and it’s a work in progress, so you can forgive the bugs and other problems that this unit has. The camera, Bluetooth and other functions don’t work as they should, but at least Skyfire offers touch input, WiFi and other basic features.
AidenM doesn’t recommend using Skyfire just yet if you want your system to be stable, but if you’re a risk taker who feels he can customize the experience to his own will, feel free to try it. Once again, this is not an official update and that’s probably a very far perspective, knowing how long it took HTC to offer Honeycomb on this tablet…
