A couple of days ago we wrote about the fact that Amazon had removed encryption from its Kindle Fire devices, via an update it issued quietly. They came under fire for that decision and wrote that at a cloud level, things were still encrypted. Now they may go back to regular encryption…

The tech giant is said to be getting back a “full encryption option” this Spring, via yet another update. The firm had motivated its decision to give up extra security, as the feature was used very rarely by Fire tablet owners. The timing is pretty bad, considering the hype around Apple’s case with encryption and the FBI.

Also, Amazon is on Apple’s side, so they support encryption, making their moves all the more erratic. I should probably mention that Amazon provides cloud computing worth $600 million for CIA, so a huge amount of servers is dedicated to them. That’s why they thread lightly in this area and don’t quite know how to play it.
