A foldable phone’s larger display only becomes useful when apps can reorganize around it. Apple is now allowing developers to submit iPhone Duo-compatible apps and games through App Store Connect ahead of the device’s reported October 23 arrival. The move gives developers a path to prepare productivity, reading, media, and gaming experiences for an interface that can change size while an app is running.
How existing apps will use the inner display
Apple says developers should build or rebuild their apps with Xcode 27.1, which adds iPhone Duo support. Its Device Hub tools let developers inspect their interfaces across different orientations and device positions. Simply recompiling, however, will not necessarily turn an older phone layout into a well-adapted foldable experience.
- Apps built with the iOS 26 SDK or earlier will run in a centered area on the inner screen, leaving unused space around the app.
- Apps built with the iOS 27 SDK can occupy most of the inner display.
- Apps built with the iOS 27.1 SDK or later can use the full display area, with navigation and toolbars adapted to the new form factor.
Responsive design is the real requirement
Apple’s preparation guidance tells developers to remove fixed dimensions and test how their interfaces resize. Because the iPhone Duo can be opened while an app is active, the app needs to respond to that transition without clipping controls or placing content awkwardly. That is particularly relevant to tablet-style tasks: a web page, document, or workspace that remains a narrow single-column phone view would leave much of the larger display’s potential unused.
Apple is also establishing a later App Store presentation requirement. Starting in April 2027, submitted apps and games will need to include iPhone Duo screenshots; Apple’s wording applies to apps submitted to the store, rather than only entirely new releases. The company is offering in-person workshops focused on adapting software for the foldable.
For users, the quality of the iPhone Duo experience will depend less on whether an app launches than on whether its developer has designed for the changing canvas. The new tools and submission process begin that transition, while the 2027 screenshot rule should make it easier to identify software that has been prepared for the expanded display.
