We usually covered software updates when it comes to negative news: Microsoft Surface and NVIDIA Shields broken down by software updates, or maybe even iPads. This time there’s a piece of good news and Samsung is really doing good on its promises. The 5 year old Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 just got updated to the October 2020 Security Patch. Samsung was on a positive streak ever since One UI, with large beta programs, fast updates and a pretty and ergonomic UI. With the Note 20 announcement we also got the promise of 3 years of Android updates for major devices. Tab S7 is probably one of them. Samsung usually pushes monthly security updates to popular devices launched over the last two years, while the remaining devices get security updates quarterly. Samsung had a poor reputation before One UI, in the days of TouchWiz and Samsung Experience.
But everything is cleared out now. Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 was launched in 2015, sporting a Snapdragon 662 CPU, a 9.7 inch Super AMOLED screen and Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. It was only updated to Android 7.0 Nougat, no love for Oreo. The security updates kept coming though for the past 5 years. The latest security update was confirmed by Verizon and Android Police too. In the meantime the Nexus 9 launched months after the Tab S2 hasn’t been updated since October 2017.
It’s not yet clear if all version of the Tab S2 will get the update, since there are also Exynos ones. There’s also an 8 inch version apparently for that device, but we’re not sure if all them got the security release.
