Royole Flexpai was the very first foldable smartphone that came in November 2018 and it was ahead of its time. Today we have a successor coming up, the Flexpai 2, which has just debuted officially and it’s priced below $1500. It competes with the likes of Huawei Mate Xs and Galaxy Fold/Z Fold 2, rather than the Z Flip or Moto RAZR 5G. Let’s see what it’s all about.

First of all, the device has an improved hinge and an improved screen, with a bigger diagonal. Royole Flexpai 2 was actually unveiled in March, but without too much info. Last week it hit TENAA and now it was fully introduced. When opened up, the device has a 7.8 inch unfolded panel with a 4:3 ratio and 1440p resolution. When folded, the screens are left on the outside, with a 16:9 5.5 inch panel upfront and a 5.4 inch back screen with a 16:10 aspect.

Inside we find a Snapdragon 865 processor, 256 or 512 GB of UFS 3.0 storage and 8 GB or 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM. No idea if there’s a microSD card slot, but probably not. The hinge is now more resilient, using a “Cicada Wing 3S” technology and providing the promise of a smooth experience and no trace of creases. It should be able to take over 1.8 million folds. Royole also came up with its own interface on top of Android 10, dubbed WaterOS 2.0 and offering multitasking features for working from home.

We only find four cameras on the left hand side, with one of them oddly enough being the selfie shooter, a 32 MP unit. The top camera is a 16 megapixel ultrawide cam, followed by an 8 MP telephoto cam with 3x optical zoom, plus a 64 MP main cam with F/1.9 aperture and 6P lens. The 32 MP cam I mentioned is a dedicated Portrait lents for selfies. You can take a picture of a person and have it look at him/herself in the secondary screen. There’s also 5G connectivity (SA and NSA), WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1, plus an USB-C 3.1 port.

A 4450 mAh battery is in the mix too, with 18W charging. Royole Flexpai 2 is available on JD.com priced at $1470, with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. There’s a $1700 version, with a 12 GB RAM and 512 GB storage. It’ll be sold from Royole itself from September 25th.
