The idea of a 4K tablet has been debated before in various prototypes and formats, usually giant slates, like Panasonic’s 20 incher. Today, Samsung has let the cat out of the bag and let some folks fondle its upcoming 12 inch 4K slate, that’s shown below.
This prototype was being used during a LTE Broadcast demonstration during the French Open at Roland Garros. The video stream it received was only 720p, but the operator was able to demo the true clarity of the picture anyway. This is only a reference device for the operators to test with, as they probably prepare to start streaming 4K for the next World Cup after the 2014 edition.
The specs for the prototype were not available, but the folks of TechRadar found out it was using a Snapdragon 801 CPU. This model may come with upscaling and the improved Snapdragon 805 processor, probably with 4 GB of RAM and the latest Android. The new video format HEVC will also be instrumental in making the bandwidth passage of large 4K files to such next gen devices.
Word on the street is that the 4K tablet will arrive from Samsung before the year is out.
