The Nexus 7 tablet is getting ready to shake the entire Android tablet market, as it prepares for its shipping date next week. For $200 you get a quad core CPU, decent 7 inch screen, no camera, no microSD card slot, but Android 4.1 Jelly Bean at its best. The customization of the slate has already begun.
The 7 inch Nexus has been rooted, overclocked and had custom ROMs applied to it. The interface can also be tweaked so that it looks like a full tablet UI. Right now there’s a phone-style UI applied. Obviously, if you’re one of the I/O folks with the tablet we recommend you take care with the hacking, since you probably know what you’re doing. However, if you’re not an expert and somehow you got your hands on the tablet, stay away entirely or you risk bricking the device.
It was logical that we would be seeing customizations earlier than usual, since this is a Nexus device, meaning that more developers will be involved in tinkering with it, since it has fresh software. The tablet can now be overclocked to 1.5 GHz and that customization is not as stable right now. Using the overclocking method, the device can score as high as 4156 points in Quadrant.
