One might think that emerging markets such as India or Mexico favour lower end tablets, but it appears that in India for example the iPad and Samsung slates dominate the market. The iPad is still the ruler of the local market, with 51% of the share in 2011. Samsung has the second spot, with 24% market share.

Indian consumers are quite fond of the RIM BlackBerry PlayBook, especially after the price decreased, so this is the third placed model in the country, with 10.4% share. Media tablets have yet to conquer the local market, in spite of some models being priced at sub $200 or close to that. At first sight, media slates from local makers such as Micromax seem like the right products, but it will take time for them to ship their products and become a household name. Everyone knows, wants and loves the iPad right now…

In India total tablet shipments in 2011 reached 0.39 million, a fraction of the 65 million models shipped internationally. A growth is expected locally with a CAGR of 71% and shipments are expected to grow to around 9.66 million units in 2017.
