On December 1st Xiaomi held a big event, meant to showcase the Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro flagships, but not only that. The company also debuted MIUI 14 and revealed when the custom UI was coming to its devices, tablets included.
There’s a forking of the software, as the tablets get MIUI 14 Pad. Apparently Xiaomi is still ironing out the kinks, so while the regular MIUI 14 for phones comes in January 2023, the tablet version will drop in early April 2023. The following tablets have been confirmed to get the update:
- Xiaomi Pad 5 Pro 12.5
- Xiaomi Pad 5 Pro 5G
- Xiaomi Pad 5 Pro
- Xiaomi Pad 5
- Redmi Pad
Judging by the MIUI 14 features on phones, tablets are expected to get a new interface, based on elongated pills, circles and squircles. There’s also a new type of stickers to place on the screen, animated ones, with pets and flowers. Icons have 4 sizes and the Project Razor optimization mechanism will reduce the number of uninstallable apps to 8. The firmware now takes up less space and the apps are much less compressed than before.
Duplicates are also eliminated and apps are cleaned. Optical Character recognition happens locally and we also get two language subtitling for video calls.
