This is not the first time I’ve heard this theory, so I can’t say I’m surprised by it. Apparently, HTC and Google are expected to partner up for an 8 inch Nexus tablet and more details about the project are available after the break.

The device will be made by HTC instead of ASUS and Google’s reason for this switch is unknown. The product is rumored to be released in the third quarter, or at least so say the component suppliers who are in the know. ASUS was Google’s partner for the first two generations of smaller diagonal Nexus tablets and for a while it was also considered a favourite to make the Nexus 10 2.

The reason for the switch could be the adoption of a new design, but HTC is a real underdog here, since they haven’t made a tablet in years. Before the Nexus 7 was made by ASUS, Google tried to contact HTC for a partnership, but they refused, as they were too busy with their smartphones.

Seeing how the Nexus series was meant to push Android as a wider choice and now it’s widespread, its purpose is now gone, so this Nexus 7 may be the last.
