The first quarter of the year 2017 is approaching its end and with it come the first sales and shipments figures of the year. Thus, we learn that these fist three months may bring a major tablet market drop, or better said yet another drop.

Digitimes Research claims that it’s expecting the tablet market to dip below 40 million units moved in Q1 2017. The estimated number is actually 39.03 million units, making this the first time it falls under 40 million units since the second quarter of 2012. Digitimes Research also states that the on quarter and on year decrease will be less serious compared to the on quarter and on year decreases from 2016 Q1.

Of course, the first 3 months of the year are traditionally bad for most vendors, of both tablets and phones. However, Apple is planning to unveil a new iPad Pro soon and Microsoft may also bring a new Surface at the BUILD conference. Samsung already has new tablets out at MWC 2017 and they’ll start selling soon. Last year brought 183 million tablets sold, a number that may not be reached this year.
