Android 2.3 Gingerbread is already loose, bringing forth a bunch of welcome improvements, that will soon reach some of the best-selling smartphones out there. Leaving aside the improved keyboard and multitouch support, plus VoIP, for a moment, we uncovered that this release provides support for larger screen sizes and higher resolutions.
Till now, some applications had to automatically scale to full screen, while others didn’t. The diagram pictured above comes from the Android developer documentation, showing support for up to 300 dpi and displays from 7 to 10 inches in diagonal. 1280 x 800 pixel resolutions are mentioned and 1024 x 600 must’ve found its way in there, too.
We’ve seen a bit of Android 3.0 Honeycomb action the other day on a Motorola slate, so we’ll settle with waiting for that release to drop, while checking out the tweaked Gingerbread on the upcoming tablets, in case it decides to be ported this way.
