  • Nvidia is updating its slates and consoles with Android to a new software version these days and right now they’re receiving Software Upgrade 5.1. Nvidia has always been good with software updates, not lagging behind the major device makers, which is a good thing.

One of the best aspects about this is that even the OG Nvidia Shield from 2014, that came with Android 4.4 KitKat has been updated to Android 7.0 Nougat. The Shield Tablet and newer Tablet K1 also get updated today. The update is known as “Software Upgrade 5.1” and sadly doesn’t come with the Android 7.1 software. It focuses on fixing issues with the Launcher3 and problems with the cursor when using a mouse.

Stability fixes are also here and as usual there should be improved memory and battery management, unless that was made available in some other recent update. The Shield Tablet is particularly relevant these days, since it can be seen as a Nintendo Switch rival, especially with both having Nvidia CPUs. The price and bigger catalog of games sides with the Nvidia product though. However, Nintendo will clearly outsell it.
