Sony Reader PRS-350 and PRS-650 Ready for Release

Sony’s getting ready to release a new set of e-readers, the PRS-350 and PRS-650 models. Both will rely on E Ink technology for their displays and they’ll be better specced battery-wise, than the previous units, PRS-600 and PRS-300.

The e-readers will be very slim (less than 10mm thick) and the PRS-650 unit will pack a 6 inch display, while the PRS-350 will go with a 5 inch panel. The 512MB of internal memory on the predecessors of these devices will now turn into 2GB and we expect 3G and WiFi to also find their way on the products, at least on the higher end one.

A new UI will also be on the specs list, as well as a note taking program on the PRS-600 and PRS-350. No info on pricing, yet…

Sony Ericsson Maino Tablet Runs Windows 7

A Sony Ericsson tablet is nowhere in sight for now, but at least we’ve got the concepts to look at. Created by Frank Tobias, the design pictured below is the one of a slate known as Sony Ericsson Maino, running Windows 7 and relying on a multitouch AMOLED display with a 1360 x 900 pixel resolution.

Maino also packs 100GB of internal memory, a 10 megapixel camera with dual LED flash, 4GB RAM memory, stereo speakers and the tablet also uses the Media Stripe feature for media control.

Sony Ericsson Maino Tablet Concept, Inspired by SE Aino

If you’re looking for a new company to enter the tablet biz, Sony Ericsson is probably the only big name staying away from this segment. However, designer Frank Tobias imaged how a tablet made by SE would look like, using the Aino handset as an inspiration. The result was the Sony Ericsson Maino tablet concept, pictured below and created by Frank Tobias.

We have no specs for the device just yet, but we can imagine it’s got a 10 inch touch display, multitouch support, possibly Android, 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth and enough internal memory to make the iPad jealous. These are all speculations, but the designer promised to deliver some specs soon enough.

Sony Preparing iPad Rival and PSP Phone?

Every major company out there is announcing or readying an Apple iPad rival, so Sony couldn’t just stand aside and watch these initiatives. Apparently, they’re also gearing up to launch a cool tablet, while WSJ also mentions a gaming smartphone, maybe that cool PSP Phone we’ve been waiting for over the past years.

Some even claim that the two devices are a single MID/netbook/ereader able to compete with JooJoo, iPad, Nintendo DS and Archos products. This isn’t all about hardware novelty, as Sony are also supposed to launch a new online media platform in the US this month.

Once again Sony is partnering with Sony Ericsson on the design of the gaming handset, but this time the maker of the PSP is playing a bigger part in its creation. Senior VP Kunimasa Suzuki (involved with Sony’s Vaio division) is leading the product planning for new mobile devices, according to Sony, so we might see a Vaio tablet announced soon.

Sony Unveils Dash Internet Touchscreen Tablet, Running Chumby OS

Sony’s also jumping on the tablet wagon, but the product they’ve just unveiled is a tad different from the devices made by Motorola, Samsung, Asus or Dell. The Dash Internet Viewer is a touchscreen WiFi device, that can be used a digital photo frame, but it lacks the portability of a genuine tablet.

It’s got a 7 inch display, it can run Chumby apps (around 1,000 free ones available), since it runs the Chumby OS, plus it supports Sony’s Music and Picture properties for movie trailers, music videos and more. An unit goes for $199 and we also learn that the Dash Internet tablet can be tilted in lots of viewing angles and that it also features an alarm clock function.

Expect the product to ship in April and remember that this device is NOT portable, so there’s no built in battery.

Modded Sony Vaio UX490, the Most Impressive UMPC in the World

When was the last time you saw a device able to quad boot? The device below might just be the most impressive UMPC we’ve ever seen, a modded Sony Vaio UX. The mod was done by the folks of MicroPCTalk and the result is a customization masterpiece and a real piece of work.

The UMPC has had its original 48GB SSD replaced with a 128GB RunCore Pro IV SSD and you should also know that its Core 2 Solo U2200 1.2 GHz CPU was swapped with an Intel Core 2 Duo U7700 @ 1.33 GHz (overclocked to 1.438 GHz), a more powerful solution.

Sony Vaio UX supports HSDPA/UMTS (900/2100 MHz) 3G connectivity with speeds of up to 7.2Mbps, plus GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), voice calling and texting. Now to the interesting part, you’ll notice that the device quad boots Mac OSX Leopard 10.5.7, Windows Vista Business, Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows XP Professional.

If you’re wondering about benchmarks, know that UX490 is able to reach a 57k rating in Crystal Mark, making it the best UMPC ever and the fastest, to be honest.

Sony Vaio EL Prototype Laptop Packs Dual Screens

Sony has recently showcased its new Vaio EL laptop prototype, with the main appeal of having two OLED displays on board and no keyboard at all. The device comes with a touch-sensitive OLED display, that’ll replace the physical keys and allow the user to enter the world of touch input.

Also stunning is the fact that this laptop is very, very thin, so we’re really curious to have a look at its specs and battery life. It’s also possible that both or one of the displays are flexible, yet another reason to consider this a mere prototype, not ready for mass production.

Sony VAIO L Touch PC/TV Comes With Multi-Touch Interface

Sony’s a bit late at the portable device multitouch game, following HP and Gateway into this segment, by unveiling the VAIO L Touch HD PC/TV. It seems that multitouch was included here, just to have more fun with Windows 7, not that it’s a bad thing, since we like the new Microsoft OS.

SonyVaioL

VAIO L is not your average all in one PC, since it can also be used as a HDTV, thanks to its 24 inch widescreen display, supporting a 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution. As far as specs are concerned, you get an Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400S processor (2.66GHz), 6GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce GT 240M GPU.

The starting price for this HDTV with a PC inside is $1,300, quite a bunch for these features.
