JooJoo UI Gets Reworked, Looks Great

JooJoo was supposed to be the tablet to rule the world, before the iPad was a mere concept. Now, it has been delayed a bunch of times, had a scandal associated to it and TechCrunch and quite a lot of changes, as far as the software, UI and hardware are concerned. This product is becoming more and more like Starcraft 2: a real ghost.

Fusion Garage is solving issues with its capacitive touchscreen right now, as we’ve learned from a previous piece of news. Also, the maker of the tablet took advantage of the product’s delay to also work on its interface. Its homescreen has been revised, as you can see in the shots included in this article.

We have to say that the icon grid looks great on the high-res customizable wallpaper, couple with a vertical swipe that brings down a status bar. The latter includes the Home Button, status indicators and browser navigation controls. An address bar/search field combo is also present in there, while the improvements of the UI also include better scroll behaviour, with two types of actions: a two finger scroll (used like a scroll wheel) and a single finger pan (with the role of mouse arrow).

These scroll mechanisms will be particularly useful in apps like Google Maps and Fusion Garage claims that it wants to deliver the full web experience through such implementations. Text entry has also been improved and now there’s a smaller keyboard shown on screen, for easier one handed operation. More info on JooJoo interface upgrades in Engadget’s piece over here.

JooJoo Tablet Shipping Date Moved to March 25th

The JooJoo tablet might find it hard to compete with the Apple iPad if it keeps on being delayed like this. We’ve just learned that Fusion Garage plans on shipping the device on March 25th, due to a delay caused by “manufacturing issues”. Said issue was related to the touch sensitivity of the 12.1 inch capacitive touchscreen display on board of the tablet.

Apparently, the issue was resolved, but this added another month to the scheduled shipping date of the JooJoo. The PR note of the folks of Fusion Garage says that the Internet tablet went into full production and it was supposed to hit the market at the end of February. However, the manufacturing issue was discovered and the units were taken back for modifications.

This statement is followed by apologies and we sure hope that this is the last time we see a delay in the launch of this tablet.

JooJoo Tablet Ships This Month, Complete with Flash and App Store

The iPad media storm is over, so it’s time to give the JooJoo tablet some quality time, since the device formerly known as the CrunchPad is about to get launched this month. Its maker, Fusion Garage announced that the product will start shipping in weeks with full production on its way.

Fusion Garage teamed up with Malaysian OEM CSL Group, to cover the costs of the tablet manufacturing process. CSL will get a part of the revenue associated with the product, as a follow-up of this cooperation. It has also been confirmed that the tablet comes with full Flash support and even HD Flash content, thanks to the Flash 10.1 technology.

There’s a web app store coming, as well, apparently one that’s bigger than Apple’s according to Fusion Garage CEO Chandra. JooJoo will retail for $499 and it’ll pack a 12 inch display, larger than the 9.7 one of the iPad, but who knows if Apple won’t come up with a larger version of its tablet?

2010, Dominated by Tablet PCs?

We’re nearing the end of 2009 and with the arrival of 2010, we notice that more and more companies are getting ready to launch tablet PCs. From Apple to Dell and from Asus to Microsoft, every major player on the computer market is getting ready to enter the tablet segment with a cool new product. Will 2010 be the year of the tablet? Let’s check out the main products in this segment, that are bound to be launched soon.

The JooJoo

Formerly known as Crunchpad, the JooJoo tablet is very much real, unlike the models we’re about to discuss. It’s even been tested by most important gadget blogs, who found it very satisfying and it comes with a 12 inch touchscreen, with a 1366 x 768 pixel resolution. It’s able to play 720p videos and its processor is a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom CPU, while the list also includes 1GB RAM, 4GB SSD memory, an USB 2.0 port, webcam and microphone.

A headphone jack is also on board, together with Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, but the 3G is lacking. This device is already on sale and up for pre-orders, for $499 and things started off pretty weird for the product, with the whole TechCrunch – Fusion Garage scandal.

Dell Android Tablet

Dell also wants a piece of the tablet market, so it’s readying something cool to showcase at CES 2010. All we know right now is that the device will sport a 5 inch touchscreen, it’ll run Android and it’ll have cool multimedia features. Chances are that this is the Dell Streak we’re talking about, but the Moto Sholes tablet is also worth mentioning.

Expect the new product to debut in the UK first, followed by the States.

Asus Eee Pad

Asus wants to expand its Eee series of products by launching a tablet in 2010, dubbed the Eee Pad. This device will probably feature a display with a diagonal size between 4 and 7 inches (touchscreen).

It’ll also include PC and MID functions and the Eee Pad seems to be inspired by the rumoured Apple Tablet.

Microsoft Courier

First shown as a concept a couple of months ago, this hot looking device is very much real, but it caters more to the e-reader side of things. Microsoft Courier will feature two 7 inch displays, a built in camera and WiFi.

Multitouch and stylus are both supported and it seems that the Courier will be destined to be more of a paper day planner gone digital or a device for people into sketching and design.

Apple Tablet

We left the best for last, since the Apple Tablet is our daily rumour for the past couple of months. It’ll sport a 9 to 10 inch touchscreen, be priced as high as $1000 and probably get announced in January.

The latest rumours have it ready for sale in March/April and its design makes it look like a bigger iPod Touch-MacBook combo.

Which of these devices will get the best sales in 2010? What do you think?

Gizmodo supposes that there’s an Nvidia Ion chipset under the hood, ready to handle 1080p YouTube video on the 12 inch display of the tablet, supporting a 1366 x 768 pixels resolution. JooJoo also packs a headphone jack, a microphone jack, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, a charging port and a USB port.

The reviewers tested this gadget’s web browsing experience, discovering an accelerometer that detects between vertical and horizontal orientations and finding the browsing to be pretty neat. JooJoo’s body is solid, the screen is bright and the back of the device is curved and plasticky in a good way.
