HP Official Tweet Shows Tablet, Smartphone Prototypes

HP’s CTO Phil McKinney was recently spotted in a couple of images posted on Twitter, that showed some prototypes of interesting mobile devices. They seem to include a tablet, a smartphone and some other fun gadget at McKinney’s wrist, if we’re not mistaking. The pics were tweeted by Mark Budgell, another HP employee, but all we know about these devices is that they’re early prototypes.

No info of WebOS running on any of them and not even the screen sizes were revealed. Budgell also tweeted something about voting for McKinney’s SXSW 2011 panel, one meant for predictions and prototypes and created to showcase the way gadgets will look like in 5 to 10 years. So, these could be prototypes from the remote future, after all…

Top 5 Upcoming Slates of 2010 and 2011 (BlackBerry Tablet and PalmPad Included)

We’re definitely living in the era of portable devices and the concept of desktop is become obsolete real fast, but we’re really past the whole netbook craziness. Tablets are the new way of getting around and taking your content, info, contacts and social networks with you, wherever you are. IntoMobile has a nifty piece on the top 5 upcoming tablets of 2010 and 2011, that we’ll dissect in the following lines.

5) BlackPad

We’ve heard tons of rumors about RIM’s very first tablet, but nothing solid till now. Speculations claim it’ll be called the BlackPad, it’ll feature BB OS 6 and possibly serve as a companion for BlackBerry handsets. Its specs should include a 1 GHz CPU, a back and front camera, support for Flash 10.1 and a display that should be about 7 to 9.7 inches.

4) Samsung Tab

Samsung wants a piece of the profitable tablet pie and they’re not afraid to show it, so they’re gearing up to launch the appealing Tab slate. This device comes with a 7 inch display, a 1.2GHz Cortex A8 CPU, Android 2.2 and the TouchWiz 3.0 UI. Expect this slate to land any time now, possibly even next month.

3) iPad 2

The successful iPad will have a successor it seems, maybe even sooner than we thought, if we’re to believe speculations claiming we’ll see a new version of the Apple tablet being launched before 2011. No believable info was revealed till now, but something tells us we’ll see a camera on the new iPad, possibly more memory and a better screen resolution. Retina Display and iOS 4 would also make nice additions to the slate…

2) PalmPad/HP’s Hurricane

Not a day goes by without us learning something new about HP’s upcoming WebOS tablet. The device uses the codename Hurricane, but considering HP’s trademark for the PalmPad name, there’s no telling what the final branding of the product will be. The advantages? Pure WebOS multitasking and maybe that evolved WebOS 2.0 we’re so anxious to see in action. Launch should be somewhere in early 2011…

1) Notion Ink Adam

Notion Ink Adam is by far the most promising tablet we’ll see on the market in the following months. It’s got everything: a 10 inch Pixel Qi display, Android 2.2, a swiveling 3.2 megapixel camera, USB, a SIM card slot, HDMI, WiFi and a potent NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core Cortex A9 CPU. This baby may not look as sexy as the other slates, but it sure packs a punch!

HP Confirms WebOS Tablet Officially… Nothing New Here

Although we were pretty much sure that HP was going to launch a WebOS tablet in the future, the company went out and pointed out the obvious, by officially announcing their plans. Thus, it was revealed that HP will launch a slate based on Palm’s platform in early 2011. HP executive VP Todd Bradley said that a Windows-based tablet is coming sooner than the WebOS one, so we’ll most likely see it in stores before the end of 2010.

Bearing the codename Hurricane, HP’s WebOS slate aims to be an iPad rival and the first fruit of the Palm buyout. Let’s just see how this device fits in with a market filled with Android slates and some devices based on Windows 7. It’ll be interesting to see if Project Hurricane eventually turns into Palmpad, specially since HP already has the trademark for this name.

HP webOS Tablet to Debut in 2011

HP’s Personal Systems Group VP Todd Bradley recently leaked told employees that there’s a tablet cooking and the product will be released in 2011. Included in a project called Hurricane, the supposed webOS slate might be released under PalmPad branding, since HP recently filed for the trademark on the name not so long ago.

Speculations claim the tablet will debut in Q1 2011, possibly being launched together with a bunch of Android 3.0 devices at the time. A Q4 2010 launch would suit HP’s desire to sell millions of units better, since the holiday season will have people craving for an iPad rival and Notion Ink’s Adam is nowhere in sight yet…

HP PalmPad/Hurricane WebOS Tablet Coming in 2011?

Speculations concerning a possible webOS tablet made by HP are becoming more and more realistic, as now there’s a rumor going round, saying that the company is preparing a slate called Hurricane. Said device will rely on Palm’s OS and this info was apparently leaked from HP employees. The slate should debut in early 2011 and another unconfirmed name for the device is PalmPad.

Q1 is the time frame of the product’s debut and we have to remind you that HP filed for the PalmPad trademark recently, confirming rumors regarding a possible Palm-based slate. It’ll be interesting to see how webOS evolves towards version 2.0 and how well it fits on a tablet that’s designed to interact with HP’s printers.

HP Preparing Android-based eStation Zeen Tablet

Although many experts were sure that HP was going to give up both Android and Windows 7 in favor of webOS on its future tablets, there will be at least one slate running Google’s mobile OS made by the US company. A recent FCC filing shows that HP is ready to launch an e-Reader based on Android and able to interface with the company’s Zeus printer.

Engadget’s sources say that this will be a tablet/e-reader focused on e-reader features and integrating the B&N bookstore. Its specs include a capacitive touchscreen, HP’s custom UI, Android 2.1, an SD card slot and a front facing webcam. We’ll see unique widgets and other specific HP features on this device, specially in the UI section.

Zeen will be available in two versions: a standalone product and bundle with a compatible printer, that goes for $399.99.

HP Slate Now Known as eStation Zeen… Alive Again?

While HP’s having some image problems because of the famous Mark Hurd sex harassment scandal, the company is apparently gearing to launch new products. They include the on again off again Slate, that’s now supposedly dubbed the eStation Zeen. Said device recently passed FCC certification, so it’s as real as it gets. We’re talking Android here, but odds are that this is more of an e-reader and less of a tablet.

Engadget did some digging in the FCC documents and only found the name of the unit and the back panel line drawing. It seems the device doesn’t have what it takes to be THE HP Slate and sources say that the Zeen is in fact an Android eReader able to dock with HP printers and interface with them. Pretty cool, right?

Microsoft to Improve Its Tablet Development to Rival Apple; HP Cooperation Coming, Too

Microsoft’s CEO, Steve Ballmer recently announced that the Redmond giant needs to focus on developing their tablet segment products, specially now that the iPad has reached strong sales. The Wall Street Journal mentions that MS is working with its hardware partners on a bunch of new slates, that rely on Windows 7.

Hewlett-Packard is one of these partners, but the company will only use Windows 7 on a business tablet, making a consumer slate that uses WebOS, gained from the Palm purchase.

HP Slate Clone Seen in China

While HP is busy getting the trademark for the PalmPad tablet, their “Slate” project seems to be dead enough to let others deal with it. Straight from China comes your average HP Slate clone, pictured below and based on Windows 7. A 10 inch display is also on board, with 1366 x 768 pixel resolution, but too bad that this is a resistive multitouch screen we’re talking about.

It also incorporates a webcam, a 1.66GHz Atom N450 CPU, an USB port, a 3.5mm audio jack, a VGA port, a LAN port, an accelerometer, 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth. A free stand is bundled with the clone… wow, right?

HP Slate 500 Windows 7 Tablet Leaks on its Maker’s Site

In spite of recently dismissing its plans to launch a HP Slate, followed by the trademark registration of the Palmpad, HP’s attitude towards tablets remains a bit of a mystery. However, a recent find on the company’s site (a product listing) points towards plans concerning slates. Uncovered as the HP Slate 500, the device we’re talking about might run Windows 7.

Other unconfirmed specs include a 1.6GHz processor and 1GB RAM. Could this be another name for the HP PalmPad webOS device we’ve heard about the other day? The product page of the mysterious Slate 500 also mentions two cameras and auto screen rotation, while speculations claim that the slate could use a dual touchscreeen.

The question is: webOS or Win 7?
