Top 5 Upcoming Slates of 2010 and 2011 (BlackBerry Tablet and PalmPad Included)

We’re definitely living in the era of portable devices and the concept of desktop is become obsolete real fast, but we’re really past the whole netbook craziness. Tablets are the new way of getting around and taking your content, info, contacts and social networks with you, wherever you are. IntoMobile has a nifty piece on the top 5 upcoming tablets of 2010 and 2011, that we’ll dissect in the following lines.

5) BlackPad

We’ve heard tons of rumors about RIM’s very first tablet, but nothing solid till now. Speculations claim it’ll be called the BlackPad, it’ll feature BB OS 6 and possibly serve as a companion for BlackBerry handsets. Its specs should include a 1 GHz CPU, a back and front camera, support for Flash 10.1 and a display that should be about 7 to 9.7 inches.

4) Samsung Tab

Samsung wants a piece of the profitable tablet pie and they’re not afraid to show it, so they’re gearing up to launch the appealing Tab slate. This device comes with a 7 inch display, a 1.2GHz Cortex A8 CPU, Android 2.2 and the TouchWiz 3.0 UI. Expect this slate to land any time now, possibly even next month.

3) iPad 2

The successful iPad will have a successor it seems, maybe even sooner than we thought, if we’re to believe speculations claiming we’ll see a new version of the Apple tablet being launched before 2011. No believable info was revealed till now, but something tells us we’ll see a camera on the new iPad, possibly more memory and a better screen resolution. Retina Display and iOS 4 would also make nice additions to the slate…

2) PalmPad/HP’s Hurricane

Not a day goes by without us learning something new about HP’s upcoming WebOS tablet. The device uses the codename Hurricane, but considering HP’s trademark for the PalmPad name, there’s no telling what the final branding of the product will be. The advantages? Pure WebOS multitasking and maybe that evolved WebOS 2.0 we’re so anxious to see in action. Launch should be somewhere in early 2011…

1) Notion Ink Adam

Notion Ink Adam is by far the most promising tablet we’ll see on the market in the following months. It’s got everything: a 10 inch Pixel Qi display, Android 2.2, a swiveling 3.2 megapixel camera, USB, a SIM card slot, HDMI, WiFi and a potent NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core Cortex A9 CPU. This baby may not look as sexy as the other slates, but it sure packs a punch!

What about you? What’s the tablet you’re looking forward to the most?

New Apple iPad Ad Claims Tablet is Delicious… Productive?! (Video)

Ok, we’ll give you that much… the iPad is delicious, if you use it as a dish for your sushi meals, but what about productive? Such attributes are thrown out at the public in the latest iPad commercial, shown below. “Productive” is the one that had us smiling, though, since a Windows 7 tablet can do a ton more stuff than the iPad, in the productivity segment.

Apple is lucky to have such a strong PR machine behind it and its army of fans, else we won’t be witnessing the millions of tablet units sold till now. Two factors are key for its real success: fluid interface and user-friendliness.

iPad Traffic to TechCrunch Surpasses Linux, Close to iPhone Share

The folks of TechCrunch recently published a piece regarding the iPad traffic their site gets, versus the folks accessing the website from Linux devices and from the iPhone. Thanks to the stats they published, we learn that the iPad browsing traffic is surging and it’s grown four fold compared to April, for example.

The iPad OS is the fourth most popular platform that folks use to reach TechCrunch these days, surpassing Linux machines and closing in on the iPhone. iOS devices combined now reach over 10% of browsing share, while Windows stays on the first place, with 55.20%, followed by Mac, with 26.88%. Back in April, those numbers were: Windows – 59.68%, Mac – 27.78%, iPhone – 5%, Linux – 5% and iPad – 1.18%.

Just for fun, here’s some figures from 2007, also showing the platforms used to browse to TechCrunch: Windows – 81.12%, Mac – 14.80%, Linux 3.05%, iPhone – 0.52%.

This makes the device usable underwater and in case you’re wondering, the accessory goes for $45, via the Aquapac website. As shown in the video at the end of the article, the case can withstand waves and water contact, so you’ll browsing your way into the sea or while taking a dive in the pool.

7 Inch iPad to be Available Before the Year End?

The Economic Daily reports that a couple of Taiwanese companies have sealed deals with Apple, concerning a potential iPad 2. Said device will debut before Christmas time and it’ll pack a 7 inch display. This screen will rely on the IPS technology of the original iPad and its touchscreen panel will be supplied by Cando Corporation.

We’ve heard about a 7 inch iPad version previously, courtesy of an iLounge report earlier this month, that was accompanied by a mockup. Digitimes also had a scoop on the matter last week, so it’s very likely that the current 9.7 inch iPad may have a successor in the works, one that uses a smaller display.

Apple iPad Goes Head to Head With Windows 7 Slate (Video)

The following video shows something you’ve always dreamt about: the duel between a Windows 7 tablet and the famous Apple iPad. The first device is a Hanvon slate, that was first shown at IDF 2009, so the tablet had plenty of time to develop by now. As you can see, the Hanvon unit handles tasks pretty well and does just as good as the iPad when playing YouTube videos, browsing the web or accessing the email inbox.

The main difference between the two experiences is the fact that the Win 7 UI was clearly designed for mouse interaction, while the iPad is all about touch. That doesn’t mean that the Hanvon slate doesn’t pack a beautiful and user-friendly touch keyboard, but sadly the device has some issues with small selections.

True multitasking is one of the advantages of the Windows 7 slate and we must mention that the unit is able to run full-featured apps as well. More ports and a camera are other extras that the iPad lacks and the Hanvon tablet has to offer. At this moment, the iPad experience is more fluid, in the spite of the Apple device’s lacks, so we guess the Cupertino giant’s rivals have to come up with a brand new UI in order to make the iPad seem less appealing to the average Joe.

iPad Cortex A9 Version, Verizon CDMA iPhone 4 and AMD Fusion Apple TV coming in 2011, Q1

Since HTC is leaking top smartphones, Verizon an entire roadmap and other companies showing their devices by mistake too, Apple might as well reveal its plans for the future. DigiTimes have done some research and came up with the following info: two new iPads will debut in Q1 2011, plus a CDMA iPhone in December 2010 and a new Apple TV.

The new iPads will be available in 9.7 inch and 7 inch versions, while the fresh Apple TV will be based on AMD Fusion. Also on the iPad front, we found out that the slates will run ARM Cortex A9 CPUs, use 512MB of RAM and the smaller unit will rely on a 7 inch IPS LCD display, with a 1024 x 768 pixel resolution.

As far as the CDMA iPhone 4 is concerned, the handset is supposed to go live in January 2011, after a CES 2011 announcement, courtesy of Verizon. The device might also solve the antenna issues, at least in this version. The new Apple TV will rely on local and Internet streaming and give up the internal hard drive, plus it’ll come with an iPhone-style US and maybe use iOS and App Store. Mass production to debut in December 2010.

Live TV Streaming Provided by Dish Network Via Free Mobile Apps

Dish Network has a neat Sling Mobile-associated offer available for portable devices, involving free live TV streaming through mobile apps. The iPhone and iPad app (and soon an Android app) only allow the devices to control the DVR (SlingLoaded VIP922) for now, but starting September, they’ll provide the same features as the $29.99 SlingPlayer Mobile.

Dish subscribers won’t have to pay a dime extra, other than the fee for the DVR or the set tops connected to the Slingbox.

Apple to Release Smaller iPad, new iPods; Rumors Say iPhone 5 Will Debut in Early 2011

iLounge has got a bag full of rumors talking about future Apple products. Among them we find a smaller iPad, a smaller iPod and the supposed launched date for the next iPhone. Apparently, a trusted source mentions that the iPhone 5 will debut in early 2011 and the new iPad will sport a 7 inch touch display.

This would make the Apple slate more pocketable and as far as the new iPhone is concerned, it’ll probably be a revamp of the iPhone 4 model, solving its antenna issues. Some say the iPhone 5 will be CDMA Verizon material, but we’re far from any confirmation, yet.

Also, the same rumor batch mentions that Apple is readying new (and cheaper) bumpers to hand out to the public.

iPad 2 to Feature a Camera, According to Leaked Documents

Believe it or not, AppleInsider has managed to find online documentation regarding the iPad 2′s specifications, that will seemingly include a camera. The leak was based on the iPad’s management console, a tool for corporate users, who rely on it to restrict features on their employees’ iPads.

Usually, the console mentions stuff like passwords, e-mail and calendar locking and other similar business features. However, the novelty of this find is the fact that the list of Available Restrictions now includes the “use of a camera” on the iPad. While some say that the current Apple slate could receive a camera as an accessory, we think it’s more likely that the accessory will be incorporated into the iPad 2.

Apple Insider also mentions that back in April, Apple posted a job, looking for an iPad tester who had knowledge of digital camera technology, so this might mean something after all.
