  • Big phone and tablet makers aren’t gunning for the Indian market for nothing, as it has a huge growth potential, despite still being branded as “emerging market”. The most recent report from IDC shows us the stats of this market for the Q2 2016 time frame and there’s no surprise that growth happened.

The market grew by 14.4% over that period, compared to Q1, but also dropped 5.6% compared to Q2 2015. Datawind remains the pack leader, with a 27.5% market share, while Samsung has the second place, with 14.7% share. 3 out of 4 tablets sold in India are priced below $150, it seems and local vendors are the ones driving the growth, including Datawind, iBall and Micromax.

Samsung dominates the mid $150 to $350 area, while the premium one is ruled by Apple, for the $300+ slates. The iPad Air 2 is doing particularly well. Detachables are also growing and the future is expected to bring more growth, as the festive season is coming. For the whole of 2016 expectations are that the tablet shipments will decline marginally from 2015.
