  • It’s time for another classic among devices, the Galaxy Tab S to start receiving the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update. The story of the most respected Sammy slates began two years ago, when finally the Tab S models were able to fight the iPads on battery and design turf.

Samsung didn’t say when Marshmallow is coming, but confirmation has been offered to the likes of Sammobile for example. “The near future” is the best timeline we have so far and it’s probably going to be a Q3 release, or maybe an August one. It’s very important to mention that the OG Tab S may only receive Marshmallow as a last update and not Android Nougat in the future.

The update will implement Doze on the tablets, for extra battery optimization when it comes to app usage, as well as Google Now on tap, improved permission management and the latest security fixes. Several menu design traits may also be changed and the look of the icons too.

      Best news of my week.

Every week there seems to be another claim that the original Tab S will be receiving the Android 6 update “very soon”, yet it never materialises. This is due to Samsung’s apparent policy of withdrawing support of “flagship” devices only until the superceding model hits stores. It is widely accepted in android quarters that the Tab S 10.5 has never been bettered. Just look at current retail and resell prices it attracts. Yet Samsung appears to have never realised this, releasing it’s successor with a much smaller screen size. If this is a ploy by Samsung to force customers to downgrade to the newer model then it hasn’t worked with me. I will continue to use my Tab S 10.5 every day until it either breaks or runs out of steam. But I will never buy another Samsung branded device.

Agreed, great tablet, only bettered by the Sony Xperia tab Z2, which I also own. The tab S2 really is a downgrade. Samsung will redeem itself if it updates this beautiful tablet to 6.01. The Sony tab Z2 was upgraded to Marshmallow many months ago, and may even get Nougat!

But it ain’t gonna happen. My Tab S has only had 3 security updates in 2 years. Disgraceful.
