India Tablet Shipments Lagging in Q1 2016
Interestingly, when we usually cover the Indian tablet market, we do so with good news, like that market being solid in spite of the global tablet segment dropping. Today, it seems that not even India can take the heat, as the latest IDC figures reveal that the local slate market remained flat over Q1 2016.
The total shipments reached 0.86 million units, including the slate and detachable units. Still, the shipments grew by 1.3% compared to the same period of last year. Consumer interest seems to have been declining and the success of phablets is dragging down the whole thing. Detachables continue to get traction, with triple digit growth and this also pushes Windows higher in market share.
Windows-based models account for over 70% of this niche, but Apple’s recent entry into the segment also gave them pretty good numbers. Micromax is chief in the detachables category, with them standing for more than one third of total shipments in Q1 2016. In the meantime, Datawind remains at the top of the tablet vendor heap, with 27.6% percentage and a 33.5% growth.
Next up is Samsung, with 15.2% in Q1 2016 and a 3.7% shipment dip.
