There Will be No New Nexus 7 2016 Tablet at I/O 2016, Say Sources Close to Google

  • Some of us were hoping to catch a glimpse of that mythical new Nexus 7 tablet at Google I/O 2016, the event that will take place later this month, but now it seems we’ve hoped in vain. The tablet market is in disarray and worldwide shipments keep decreasing. Google is said to have canned the Nexus slate program and that doesn’t surprise us.

The last models we saw in that range were the Nexus 7 in 2013 and the Nexus 9 in 2014. In spite of all rumors, some of them mentioning HTC and Huawei as OEM partners, this year won’t bring any new Nexus 7 device. The big G did experiment with the Pixel C last year, a 2 in 1 hybrid with Android Marshmallow, a high price and high end specs.

Google is more likely to announce new phones at this year’s I/O event, rather than tablets, although traditionally the conference has been more about software. Android N is expected to finally get a codename and a figure and we should learn more about its features. It’s not yet time for a Pixel C replacement we think, but rather a Nexus VR headset, if you really want something special from Google…

Looks like I won’t be replacing my Moto Nexus 6 then. Was so hoping for the Huawei built Nexus 7.
