  • China Union Branch has announced a while back the development of a smartphone – tablet combo very similar to the ASUS Padfone.  The TransPhone is a device that was in the prototype phase at the moment we wrote the article. We are talking about a flat panel display with a dock for a smartphone on its back side. This panel comes with a large screen and it extends the battery life of the handset, when integrated.

Latest info from China is that the TransPhone along with the TransPad are now available for purchase at some very good prices. The devices are available around the Globe with a limited time free shipping offer. The TransPhone has a 3.5″ screen and the TransPad a 7″ screen.  Any TransPhone can use several TransPads (and vice versa).  Just as you would with the ASUS PadFone, you can transform your TransPhone into a tablet and enjoy the bigger screen for browsing the web and gaming. Some of the key specks for the TransPhone:

since the asus fonepad never took off and looked nice, why would this do any better being so ugly.

    • David

Wow the spec suck! and on website it say “TRANSPHONE
2 DUE MID 2013″. Why would you buy this ugly sub-spec…

    • David

And its not cheap, considering the spec!!

can you only use the tablet or you need the phone inside

It’s not easy for a small company to break into this market with the
big boys bringing out new designs and upgrades quarterly. However, the
idea is pretty unique and does offer a hunk of benefits over just a
smartphone used alone. There is an upgraded model of this due out soon
to a much more recent acceptable spec with further upgrades on top to
catch up with and keep apace the market.

The current price is only $299.99 which, at the end of the day, is an
excellent deal for an unlocked out of contract phone and tablet docking
device in one. You won’t find that anywhere else.

Do you buy specs or do you buy user experience and usefullness? My twice-the-price Blackberry is on the shelf and TransPhone is at work in its place because it does more than twice as much at half the price and a FAR lower TCO than a connected phone + a connected tablet. I pay for usefulness not for sound-wonderful specs which look good on paper. I am not the only one – I know at least one person who has thrown out his iPhone 4 (and cancelled plans to buy iPhone 5) because a TransPhone gives him overall a much better experience and is more useful despite what you call its “specs that suck”

Price on their webpage is now $299.99 I see

I think it’s quite a cool piece of innovation. The owners of Transphone and Transpad have 3 US Patents going back to 2002 I understand. Like User_Freak, I buy based on user experiences and as the owner of a BlackBerry Curve myself find that the screen size isn’t ideal, which is why I have bought the Transphone & Transpad. Another very good reason is the fact that I don’t have to tie myself in to an expensive 24 month contract, like I had to with the Curve. Additionally, every contract I have had since 1998 the monthly price I paid was never as expected. Now if this happens I am not held to ransom and can just dump the Mobile service Provider and select an alternative!!
