Motorola Tablet, Closer to Reality?

Yesterday, during Motorola’s post-earnings conference call, the company’s co-CEO (Sanjay Jha) talked about the new form factors that are being considered right now and tablets also came up. Barron’s quotes the official, saying that Motorola wants a convergence with a PC and mobility.

Since Dell got in the smartphone game big time last week, by announcing a couple of spectacular phones and leaking a great tablet, why wouldn’t Motorola be able to do the same? Also, ASUS and HP have their games set, since their tablets should be coming this summer.

I guess that Motorola and HTC are the only big names out there without a tablet yet… Sony Ericsson and LG anyone, too… maybe.

JooJoo Tablet Ready for European Release

JooJoo is a tablet developed by Fusion Garage and we learn that the controversial and delayed product is getting ready for its European launch. The device will cost around $499 in the UK and we found out that the device will come with a couple of improvements, like full-screen HD video playback and couple of interface customizations.

One of the main appeals of the JooJoo is the fact that it’s up and running in just 9 seconds, making it one of the fastest-booting devices out there. In under 10 seconds you’ll be surfing the web, using the device’s 12.1 inch capacitive touchscreen and its WiFi connection.

iPad Robber Tears Off Victim’s Finger, Caught by Police (Video)

The iPad-mania is hitting the streets, the vicious streets that is, making even the criminals interested in the tablet. One of them is Brandon Darnell Smith, a man who ripped off a guy’s finger while stealing his iPad. If you’re curious to see the thief at work, there’s a video at the end of the article.

The good news is that the thief was caught and he’ll probably suffer quite a punishment, specially since he didn’t only steal a gadget, but also injured his victim. What some people won’t do for an iPad…

Windows XP Now Runs on Apple iPad (Video)

We’ve seen Windows 95 running on the iPad, with its share of lag, but now it’s time to take things to a new level, so a taste of Windows XP on Apple’s tablet will certainly rock. Dave Sobel, Evolve Technologies CEO is the one handling this task, by installing Wyse’s Pocket Cloud program on his 16GB WiFi iPad and turning the device into a Windows XP tablet.

The best part of this installation is that only takes about 5 minutes to have the tablet up and running XP. The video above shows what happens when you mix Wyse with VMware and Apple, with the result being a Microsoft XP installation.

Aigo is Preparing two new Android MID/Tablets

Aigo is a famous name when it comes to MIDs, like the P8860 model and recently the Maemo-based N500, but what about tablets? Apparently, the company is now planning to join the tablet market with a product called the AigoPad. It seems that Aigo is developing two new Android tablet/MIDs, one with a 5 inch display (E500) and one featuring a 7 inch screen (E700). The latter is shown in the image below.

Both devices run Android 1.6 and feature capacitive touchscreens, with support for multitouch. The specs of these units include a Rockchip 2808 processor, a dedicated video decoding chip, 720p HD video playback, storage capacities from 4 to 16GB, microSD card slots (support for up to 32GB), WiFi and Bluetooth.

An e-book and e-magazine service will also be available on the devices and we learn that the tablets will be encased in metal. Pricing is somewhere around $220 and the release date is May.

WePad Tablet Interface Gets Demoed (Video)

We’ve talked about the WePad tablet before, as one of the most promising iPad rivals so far, but here’s a bunch of videos showing its cool interface in action. What we’re dealing with here is the final version of the device and if you’re not bothered by German language, here’s 16 minutes of WePad action:

Apparently, the tablet will be available starting July and as you can see it comes with widgets, a speedy platform and interface with Linux at its core and some pretty reasonable specs. At first we knew that this is an Android device, but that remains to be seen.

We remind you that WePad comes with a 11.6 inch touchscreen display, a 1.66 GHz processor, Adobe AIR and Flash support, a SIM slot, Bluetooth 2.1 and 16GB flash memory. Pricing is around $700-$800.

Sony Ericsson Maino Tablet Concept, Inspired by SE Aino

If you’re looking for a new company to enter the tablet biz, Sony Ericsson is probably the only big name staying away from this segment. However, designer Frank Tobias imaged how a tablet made by SE would look like, using the Aino handset as an inspiration. The result was the Sony Ericsson Maino tablet concept, pictured below and created by Frank Tobias.

We have no specs for the device just yet, but we can imagine it’s got a 10 inch touch display, multitouch support, possibly Android, 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth and enough internal memory to make the iPad jealous. These are all speculations, but the designer promised to deliver some specs soon enough.

iPad Goes Orchestra Mode, Used as Piano (Video)

Remember the iPhone bands and orchestras? Now the iPad is here to take over and boy that big screen is good to play some digital music! A couple of days ago, during a concert at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, Chinese artist Lang Lang, an amazing pianist, pulled out his iPad during an encore and went wild on it. Here’s the video showing the performance:

Lang Lang sang (we know it sounds funny) Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Flight of the Bumblebee”, using the Magic Piano iPad app from Smule and putting it to good use. At some point, he used the real life piano and the iPad at the same time and even the conductor wanted to have a go at the device. We’re looking forward to seeing the first DJs doing the same thing.
