LG Display has recently unveiled an E-Book that features an internally developed thin-film solar cell. The latter measures 10cm in width and length and it was created to fit within the 6 inch display panel of the the E-books mass produced by LG Display.
The solar cell is 0.7mm thick, weighs 20 grams and it was produced by placing electrodes onto a glass or plastic substrate, an alternative to crystalline solar cells, that rely on silicon wafers. 4-5 hours of exposure to sunlight, will grant the E-book incorporating this technology an extra day of running time, with no extra charging.
This product sports an energy conversion efficiency rate of approximately 9.6%, but LG Display aims to reach 12% by 2010 and 14% by 2012.
